There are several mechanical code related items that will directly affect architects and the looks of a building. Here are a couple of examples:
- LOUVER LOCATIONS: Some AHJ will not allow exhaust louvers to be located under building overhangs. The belief is the exhaust air leaving the building will collect under an overhang and not distribute to the outside very well. So if you are hoping to hide some exterior louvers under some overhangs, don’t always count on it!
- DRYER VENTS: Clothes dryers have very strict venting length requirements. There is a maximum length listed by each dryer manufacturer that is typically around 40 to 60 feet. If the exact dryer model is unknown, code dictates that the maximum length can only be 35 feet! Don’t forget every elbow and turn will add to your equivalent length! Best ways to resolve this issue is to use long venting dryer models or locate dryers near the exterior wall where they will be vented to.
- RANGE HOODS: Make sure to use kitchen range hoods that have less than 400 CFM of exhaust! If a hood blows more than 400 CFM to the exterior, than make up air to the space is required by code. Unless there is already some make up air available, more equipment will need to be added.
