UW – IT Facility and Data Center
The new Information Technology facility brings together all four departments of the University Division of Information Technology along with the vice president’s office and related functions. Client Support Services, located primarily on the first floor, is focused on providing computer-related services and training to the university community on a walk-in basis. Telecommunication and Systems Services has two distinct components: the central computer facility with its support services and the departmental offices with their systems development laboratories and other support functions. The remaining components are Business Services and the Division of Information Services, both information technology support services. The central computing room with specialized heating, ventilating, air-conditioning, and electrical systems, has a high level of reliability to assure very minimal disruptions to computer access. BCER provided technology engineering and design services for the new 81,500-sf facility, including the 8,000-sf data center and telecom, IT, security, equipment monitoring, and audiovisual systems. BCER also assisted with evaluation of multiple potential sites, an equipment inventory of the existing campus data center, and determination of data center reliability requirements. After construction of the new data center, BCER provided relocation and cutover planning and project management for the move of UW’s existing data and equipment to the new data center, which has Tier II to Tier III redundancy in a highly flexible, modular design and serves as a hot-site backup for the State of Wyoming.
