Tivoli Student Union – Rehabilitiation and Renovation

In 2001 BCER Engineering undertook this Master Plan study for the renovation and rehabilitation of the Tivoli Student Union on the Auraria Higher Education Campus.  The Tivoli Student Union provides a variety of programs, services and activities to meet the needs of the students, faculty, staff, alumni and guests of the Community College of Denver, Metropolitan State College of Denver and University of Colorado Denver. This community center serves as a hub of student activity on the highest-enrolled, non-residential campus in the region.  The main goal of the Master Plan was to identify specific solutions for issues with the building exterior, mechanical, electrical, fire alarm and communications for the Tivoli Student Union facility.  As the mechanical systems study progressed, four alternate systems were narrowed down to two potential systems and ultimately the two systems were combined into the recommendation of a single HVAC system.  The two alternative systems were combined into one system based on the feasibility of space, construction phasing and considerations for keeping the various tenants in their spaces during construction.  The Electrical study was performed to replace/upgrade systems that were over 20 years old with very little maintenance.  The Master Plan then organized the recommended repairs, upgrades, maintenance, and rehabilitation needs of the building into a comprehensive plan that enabled Auraria Higher Education Center (AHEC) to anticipate and plan for the phasing, implementing, and estimated costs of the project.

Following the aforementioned study of the historic Tivoli Student Union building, BCER Engineering provided the Mechanical and Electrical Engineering services for the rehabilitation and renovation of the facility.  This project required significant collaboration with over 18 different user groups requiring a variety of disciplines and prioritized information be developed and coordinated to minimize disruption during daily operations and activities.  The project entailed a completely new installation of mechanical systems including a new Central Heating and Chilled Water Plant, new Air Handling Units and distribution throughout and the attendant power requirements for the new systems.  Electrical upgrades and modifications were also required to efficiently operate new mechanical equipment and to replace aging and outdated systems.  As part of the electrical services, BCER performed heat scans, audio and visual inspections and testing of the main switchgear and motor control centers to determine existing conditions.  Upgrades to the exterior lighting, fire alarm systems, and controls were also part of this project.

BCER Engineering provided the Fire Protection Engineering and Code Consulting services for the rehabilitation and renovation of this 325,000 square foot facility. The Tivoli Building has been placed and registered on the Colorado Historic Register and the National Historic Register of buildings.  The project entailed a complete and new installation of mechanical systems including upgrades to the exterior lighting, fire alarm systems, and HVAC controls.  Electrical upgrades and modifications were also required to efficiently operate new mechanical equipment and to replace aging systems including the design of a new 1250 KW generator for emergency power throughout the facility.  The success of the Tivoli project is a testament to BCER and SlaterPaull’s ability to work together on a very difficult renovation in which the building remained open.  For this project a variety of disciplines and prioritized information was developed to minimize disruption during daily operations and activities.  The project required significant collaboration with over 18 different user groups. An EST system was installed throughout the facility
