BVSD – Manhattan Middle School of Arts and Academics

BCER Engineering has completed Design of BVSD’s $10 million upgrade and addition to Manhattan Middle School.  The school was built in 1965 and has over 400 enrolled students and is currently being updated under the school district’s 2006 bond program.  The extensive remodel portion of this project consists of substantial mechanical and electrical upgrades from replacing branch wiring and firestopping wall penetrations to enlarging the auditorium, cafeteria, offices and classrooms.  The project also consists of additions to the facility to increase the number of counseling spaces, office spaces, storage, and science rooms.  Throughout the initial design and study phases of this project the Design team reviewed several sustainable design concepts.

All of the following concepts were reviewed and some were incorporated in the design:

  • Sensor Faucets
  • Wind Turbine
  • Occupancy sensors
  • Green Roof
  • Cotton Insulation
  • Tankless Water Heaters
  • Solar for Water Heating
  • Solar Panels (Photo Voltaic)
  • Xeriscape Gardens
  • Composting Center in Courtyard
  • Porous Paving in Courtyard
  • High Efficiency Windows
  • Recycling Center
  • Diverting Rain Water for irrigation
  • Wind/Solar Powered Light Poles

In the parking lot and on the outside basketball court, new dual-power light poles can be seen. Each pole has both a 170 watt photovoltaic panel and an air breeze wind turbine. The energy generated by these systems provides enough charge to the batteries on the poles to keep the lights on through the night without utilizing an outside power source.  In addition, these poles can offer a significantly reduced installation cost as there is no need for delivering external power.
